Most residential work reaches us through interior designers, and most of it is custom. Sizes are cut to the architecture rather than the other way round. The brief usually leads with appearance and hand, though entries, hallways and open-plan living carry real traffic and should be specified accordingly. Wool remains the default for good reason. It holds its appearance, it recovers under furniture, and it ages in a way synthetics do not.

Hospitality asks the most of a floor. Lobbies and corridors run continuously, food and beverage areas take spills as a matter of routine, and the whole thing has to keep looking like the brand it was designed for. Where a space needs a statement rather than a surface, hand-tufted work sits alongside it.

Workplace floors do more than cover ground. They zone open plan, absorb noise, and mark the difference between circulation and settled space. The demands are practical. Castors at every desk, cleaning to a schedule, and a fit-out likely to be reconfigured before the floor wears out. Specification favours constructions that take chair traffic and allow sections to be replaced rather than the whole floor lifted.

Retail floors work brand first. They hold attention, mark a threshold, and separate one part of a store from another. They also take footfall that never really stops, and refit cycles far shorter than the life of the product. Most retail work is bespoke, sized to a fit-out and produced to a colour decided somewhere else in the brand long before we see it.

Education is an acoustic problem before it is a floor problem. Rooms full of hard surfaces and moving bodies need something to take the noise out of them. Beyond that the requirements are durability, straightforward cleaning and a fair rate across a lot of square metres. Specification tends toward robust constructions in colours and patterns that carry the reality of the room.

Healthcare and aged care carry requirements that override preference. Cleaning regimes are not negotiable, so surfaces have to withstand repeated wet extraction without breaking down. Mobility matters, and so does pattern. In aged care particularly, a high-contrast or strongly patterned floor can be read as a change in level by residents living with dementia. The right specification here is usually the quiet one.

Event work runs to different rules. Install windows are short, floors are often laid and lifted inside a week, and the brief is brand rather than longevity. What matters is a piece that arrives on time, lays cleanly, photographs properly and can be handled without a specialist crew. Where something is intended to be reused across a touring or repeated activation, that changes the construction and needs to be raised at the outset.
