Choosing a Rug
How do I work out what size rug I need?
Start with the furniture, not the room. In a living room the rug should sit under at least the front legs of every seat, which usually means going wider than your sofa. In a dining room, measure the table and add 75cm on every side so chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out. In a bedroom, work from the bed and leave 60cm to 75cm clear on the sides you step onto.
The most common mistake is buying too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a room makes the room read smaller than it is.
Can I see a rug in person before I buy?
Yes. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane showrooms all hold stock and samples, and a consultant will pull anything you want to compare side by side. You are welcome to walk in. Booking means someone is set aside for you with your shortlist ready.
Can I borrow a sample?
Yes. Samples can be loaned from any showroom so you can see a colour in your own light, which is where the decision actually gets made. We do not hold samples of every design in every collection, so check with the showroom before you visit.
For a custom piece we recommend a physical sample before production, on top of the digital artwork approval.
Which construction suits my room?
Handknotted rugs are the most durable and hold fine detail best, which makes them right for rooms in daily use. Hand-tufted gives more freedom in pattern and pile at a lower cost and performs well in living rooms and bedrooms. Flatweaves and textures suit high traffic and hard-wearing spaces.
For hallways, stairs and commercial floors we will steer you to a denser, lower pile. It is the single specification decision that most affects how long a floor lasts.
What makes one rug more expensive than another?
Three things, mostly. Construction, because a handknotted rug takes far longer to make than a tufted one. Fibre, because a fine New Zealand wool, a silk or a wool and silk blend costs more than a standard wool. And area, because price scales with size. Design complexity and colour count move the figure as well, though less than the first three.
Can someone help me choose?
That is what our consultants are for and there is no charge for it. Send your room dimensions, a photograph of the space and anything you have shortlisted, and you will get options back with sizes worked out. If you would rather do it in person, the showrooms are set up for exactly that.
