The Iordanes Spyridon Gogos runway at Australian Fashion Week 2024 coincided with the launch of Jordan Gogos' x Designer Rugs debut collection. Inspired by the grandeur of the Trojan, the set was saturated with 200 square meters of rugs, including five pieces specifically designed for the show. Three Runway Runners spanned 24m, whilst two 4m x 4m Trojan Horses adorned the backdrop. The showstopper was the wearable Rug Dress. Each of these one-of-a-kind rugs will no doubt become collectable items, signed by the artist, Jordan Gogos.
Gogos, a Greek-Australian 29-year-old multidisciplinary artist and Powerhouse Museum creative resident, debuted his namesake brand Iordanes Spyridon Gogos at AAFW 2021.
For AFW 2024, the process of bringing this rug collection to life was an immersive journey spanning three months, spent within the confines of the Gogos' studio, at the Powerhouse Museum Sydney where Jordan has resident space.
"It involved a return to the essence of creation, exploring innovative compression patterns, hand embroidery techniques and fabric manipulation to uncover the DNA of the fabrics. The focus was on crafting new patterns through these techniques, weaving stories, time, and emotion layer upon layer" Gogos explains.
Among the collection, the rug dress stands out as a symbol of bold energy and transformative architecture. It not only captures the essence of objects within the home becoming extensions of the body but also offers a grounding experience when worn, akin to carrying the weight of the world or receiving a warm embrace.
The rugs were meticulously handmade from New Zealand Wool Blend in India. It was important to Jordan that the pieces for the show had an element of sustainability which was achieved by using excess wool that the supplier had in stock. This also gives each piece an individual uniqueness.
Christine McDonald, Designer Rug's lead designer says, “It was such an fantastic opportunity to collaborate with Jordan on this unique project. Jordan was incredibly open to allowing my many years of designing rugs drive the direction of the pieces. Seeing them come to life at AFW was one of my career highlights.”
“Rugs, like all art, start on a blank canvas and are woven, tufted, pushed and pulled through the canvas to create something so tactile and packed with fibre that it withstands the human body,” explained Gogos. “I instantly gravitated towards the idea of the feeling, the depth and bold detail being worn to resemble rugs. There is a sense of comfort, armour and security in the pieces similar to the anchorage of your feet sinking into the levitation of yarn holding you off the ground.”
