Colour, texture and tone in the rug treatments add depth to a considered interior design project in a heritage home in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.
It can be a challenge to design a memorable interior for a heritage home, working with the original features but not overwhelming them – but for Poppy Tzaneros, the Director of POCO Designs, it’s all about honouring the original space.
Tzaneros and the POCO Designs team have just completed a residential project near Sydney’s Centennial Park, a location known for its iconic heritage architecture.
“The house had amazing bones, and we wanted to design a vibrant and bold interior to complement the original characteristics of the space,” says Tzaneros. Part of her response was the inclusion of custom-made and hand-tufted rugs from Designer Rugs, all made in NZ wool and bamboo silk.
All the rugs were designed especially for this project and to reflect the individual rooms in the house.
The POCO Designs response to the clients’ brief was all about creating a cohesive and thoughtful interior – and the carefully chosen rugs were an important part of the overall concept, says Tzaneros.
“The client loved the rugs and how they anchored the rest of the furniture and pulled everything together,” she says.
The designs of the rugs were deceptively simple when it came to the pattern choices, with the team concentrating on colour and texture during the custom-design process.
“Colour selection was the focus,” explains Tzaneros. “We ensured the various tones complemented the other materials and fabrics in each room.”
And it wasn’t only the colour choices that were custom made. The stair runner was designed to fit the existing stairs, while the other rugs throughout the house were designed in sizes that complemented the generous sizes of the rooms, adding a sense of luxury and opulence.
“We often work with the Designer Rugs team to create bespoke rugs,” says Tzaneros.
“Adding in custom designs helped to elevate the rooms and ensure that this project maintained its unique character.
We always recommend bespoke solutions to create a one-off and unforgettable interior.”
