Couturier Steven Khalil draws on his expertise designing gowns for the red-carpet to create a beautiful and luxurious capsule collection for Designer Rugs.
Luxury can be found in many forms – in fashion, travel, or at home – but essentially it is all about a feeling of generosity and indulgence.
Leading fashion designer Steven Khalil is an expert on luxury. His spectacular garments are favourites for celebrities and A-listers wanting showstopping red carpet looks, or brides wanting memorable couture gowns.
And now he has turned his attention to bringing his signature style to the home with a very special collaboration with Designer Rugs. The resulting collection of three spectacular rugs reflects Steven’s attention to detail and commitment to elegance.
In this introductory capsule collection, Steven has created three rug designs that reflect his attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship, all inspired by his couture gowns.
De Miel means “honey” in French, referencing the complex honeycomb pattern of one of Steven’s gowns, translated into a dynamic, textural rug design that heroes the beautiful, fine detail found in the original gown.
“I wanted all the rugs to have an intricacy that explores the detail of the runway,” he says. “I knew this runway design would work beautifully as a rug. The pearls and sequins of that design embodies all of those elements in one wearable piece. The texture and the dimension in that gown was the starting point. It’s so dynamic.”
Inspired by elegant evening wear, the name La Nuit translates to “at night”. This design takes the glamour of the red carpet and brings it home with a moody and dramatic palette. With intricate detailing, it is perfect for intimate spaces such a luxuriously designed living area or bedroom.
“The gown that corresponds with this design had similar qualities,” explains Steven. “It was beaded in a different colour and pattern, but I knew this would connect well as a rug design without being repetitive. The elements spoke to one another, and it all married back so well to the rug when we enlarged all the details. As with all the evening gowns I’ve loved creating, I wanted this darker, more moody, rug to reflect what I get to do for the red carpet. It’s a bit of elegance and glamour for your home.”
Drawing from the delicate beading of a bridal gown, Perles is a soft yet intricate design that balances femininity with subtle elegance. The design captures the pearls and sequins of the original dress, transforming them into a dynamic, textural rug that exudes luxury and sophistication.
“There is a lovely softness to this design – the round beaded leaves, and the elegance of the pearls are a reference to a piece of bridal beading we had worked on,” says Steven. “I infused this pattern and texture with a bit of colour – soft-pink, mauvy hues to move it away from bridal a little, making it still feminine and beautiful but more relatable to home and interiors. Where the other designs have stones and sequins and other embellishment, I immediately saw the pearl sequence in this design would make a beautiful rug.”
Steven says he enjoyed working with the team at Designer Rugs, using their expertise to adapt his designs from fashion to home.
“I’ve always admired the Designer Rugs brand and its way of bringing the worlds of interiors and fashion together through their amazing collaborations,” he says.
“The process started with me sifting through all the images of past designs and homing in on some of the more striking gowns that I felt would resonate in a residential context. From there we played with scale, examining how those pieces would work if we took a snapshot of them up close.”
“I had a lot of chats with the Designer Rugs design team asking for their input and opinion on what direction they would recommend – it was a great collaboration. There was a lot of back and forth between us finessing this capsule collection to achieve what I envisaged and using their knowledge of tufts, knots, piles and colours to get something new and special.”
“It was interesting applying finely detailed elements that were part of something wearable to a different surface and purpose and in a new material – wool.”
“Because interiors are new to me it was a process of getting to know myself in the context of interiors with scale and pattern,” says Steven.
“I am looking forward to seeing how people customise these designs in scale and colour in their own spaces.”
