There are a myriad of ways to produce a handmade rug, and a wide variety of materials available with different benefits. Yarns can differ in appearance, lustre, softness, and each will perform in a different way.

The rug itself can also be made using various techniques, with methods of weaving and tufting that originate from many different parts of the world.

These differing constructions each have a distinctive texture, and have certain strengths when it comes to design, appearance and suitability for different spaces.

Wool

Valued for its durability and natural softness, sheep’s wool has been a staple of rug making for millennia.

It’s distinctive structure and lanolin content give it a number of important benefits – it is flame retardant, stain repellent, extremely durable and is even a natural dehumidifier. Wool is also a 100% renewable product, making it highly sustainable and eco friendly. We primarily use New Zealand wool in our hand tufted product, and Tibetan wool in our handknotted product.

Semi-Worsted Wool

Semi-worsted wool is a particular solid high-grade quality of wool which is created by a process of combing.

Because of its dense pile, it is ideal for use in particularly detailed hand tufted rugs.

Very intricate designs can be carved into semi-worsted wool with a crisp finish.

Bamboo

For a touch of shimmer and shine, bamboo and viscose yarns are a beautiful choice!

Made from bamboo fibres it adds dimension to many of our designs, playing wonderfully with light and shifting constantly under your gaze.

Bamboo has a lustre similar to silk and is used to emphasise portions of the rugs design, creating incredible highlights and lowlights.

Viscose

Silk

There is nothing quite like the luxurious softness and shine of pure silk.

Its unparalleled lustre comes from its unique structure, which reflects light and intensifies colour. We can incorporate silk into most of our design catalogue as part of our bespoke design service, to add an extra level of luxury to your rug.

Despite its delicate appearance, it is also an incredibly strong fibre, and can last for generations.

Hemp

One of the strongest natural plant fibers, hemp is a durable yarn that is resistant to damp, and a naturally hypoallergenic material.

We use hemp in conjunction with wool and other fibres to create interesting textural finishes and a rustic finish, such as in our Carousel and Hare + Klein collections.

Hemp creates an earthy, handmade aesthetic to our designs that adds a little touch of wabi-sabi to your space.

Hand tufted rugs are produced by shooting yarn through a tufting gun into a stretched fabric frame, much like a stretched canvas.

Each shape and colour is tufted separately, like a colour-by-numbers and their construction makes them perfect choice for geometric designs.

Hand tufted rugs are a more affordable than handknotted rugs, and their durability means they are suitable for commercial applications.

Handknot rugs are created using many thousands of individual knots, with the weaver tightly knotting the yarn around the weft of the rug.

Axminster carpets are named after a type of hand-weave style that originated in the old English town of Axminster, during the late 18th century.
