Client: The Atrium - 308 Queen St.
Architect: BVN
Builder: FDC
The historic National Australia Bank building at 308 Queen Street in Brisbane is a remarkable example of architectural excellence from its era. Originally built for a prominent financial institution, the building's grand presence and intricate detailing reflect its heritage and significance.

Acquired by a leading Queensland university, it has transitioned from a financial institution to an educational hub.

The Journey

The initial vision for the space was to expand the reach of the University with a central city location catered to students and alumni.

The aim was to establish a co-working and collaborative environment for the academic community. This space offers avenues for professional growth, networking, and engaging in events, making it the ultimate destination for career guidance, inspiration, and building connections.
Centrally positioned and with significant historical charm and abundant character, the building featured an ornate vaulted ceiling, and a captivating glass-domed interior. Complimented with bronze accents, stained glass, and strong geometrics, it was a truly unique environment with a brief to retain the historical significance with a contemporary design.

The space was to transition from a history of financial exchanges to one of intellectual sharing.

The Solution

Given the precise nature of this project and the bespoke specifications of the brief, the Designer Rugs team meticulously worked on every stage of the project, starting from the concept designs, material and construction and extending all the way to logistics and final delivery of the rugs.

The design drew inspiration from the building’s original heritage, not only honouring the significance of the bank but also celebrating the prosperity of the colony it proudly represented. The concept for the rug emerged from the desire to emulate the brilliance of the original stained-glass dome, casting an illuminating effect on the floor. Using a topographic map of Brisbane as a base, it was overlaid with rich crimson and violet hues inspired by the stained-glass domes. A contemporary spin was applied to the pattern, with a geometric framework to reflect the rooms’ structure and accentuated with gold detailing.

BVN explains that geometric shapes from the original dome design, played a pivotal role in influencing the new design. These geometric elements were seamlessly integrated into the rugs
and furniture, becoming essential components of the overall concept.

The Result

The outcome is a harmonised environment embracing both the past and future. With nine bespoke rugs and a grand staircase that respects the buildings rich heritage through opulent finishes and meticulous attention to detail, while simultaneously propelling it forward with dynamic design elements. The impeccable finish quality, intricate details and rich palette, combined with a contemporary geometric touch showcases the unique architecture of The Atrium.
